Vela Systems Co-Founder and VP of Product Strategy, Adam Omansky, presented to the CMAA Ohio Chapter on March 10, 2011, in front of one of the largest turnouts for the chapter. Representatives of Barton Malow and The Albert M. Higley Company organized and coordinated the event entitled "Putting the Field Office in Your Hand: New Trends in Construction Technology." The event was sponsored by NTH Consultants, Ltd.,Project and Construction Services, Inc. (PCS), and Ozanne, and CMAA Ohio Chapter platinum sponsor The Albert M. Higley Co. Organizers highlighted how, in many ways, basic construction practices have not changed for thousands of years, unlike many other adjacent industries such as manufacturing. Vela Systems is changing the game for field management and for construction operations on the job site, at the point-of-construction™.
Adam presented and then led an interactive discussion as to how Vela is charting a mission to revolutionize the construction industry by changing the way work in the field is done and managed, and why it benefits construction managers, general contractors, subcontractors, owners, architects, engineers and other project stakeholders, across a range of company sizes, market segments, project types and delivery methods. Adam reviewed how Vela field management programs for quality, safety, commissioning, including Field BIM® for owner handover, and documents to the field have measurably improved the quality and profitability of projects and across companies, helping organizations to gain a competitive advantage, to win more jobs and to retain customers. Attendees had a broad range of questions about metrics and key performance indicators, value and return on investment, technology adoption, cloud computing and mobile hardware.
Closing the presentation, a representative from each table conveyed questions and comments from the table to the group, about the benefits and potential challenges of adopting, implementing and utilizing field management programs and mobile technologies in construction.
As one attendee remarked, in a call to action to embrace field management programs and mobile technologies in construction,"This technology is here, and it's not going away."
