Building Information Models (BIM) have demonstrated great value for design and pre-construction processes. Since about 80% of total project costs are hard construction costs for bricks-and-mortar work put in place in the field, and about 80% of project inefficiencies are generally attributed to the construction operations on the job site, the application of BIM has great potential for construction and handover phases. Once created, the BIM contains a detailed set of objects, hierarchies and attributes that could have value during construction operations. Leveraging Field data in the BIM for construction is a concept called Field BIM.
Autodesk® Navisworks® integration: Tocci Building Company - materials tracking and punchlists
Tekla integration: Skanska - materials tracking and QA/QC

Successfully implemented on the New Meadowlands Stadium project to optimize supply chain logistics and manage critical-path materials across a distributed environment, Skanska's application of Field BIM® integrates a solution of Vela Systems field software for materials tracking and BIM software. As reported in the Engineering News Record cover story, and the AAECafe Weekly, Skanska reported a conservative cost savings of over $1MM.
Vela Systems has partnered with leading BIM providers like Autodesk and Tekla to extend the power of the information contained within BIM from the design through construction phases. Processes like worklist, punchlist, field report, quality control and quality assurance, materials management, commissioning and safety are all Field BIM applications.
By combining BIM with mobile field software and the RFID technology, AECO industry leaders can coordinate the scheduling and quality of building materials across a distributed environment, from manufacturing to delivery and installation. The solution can also extend to facilities and warranty management, beyond the design-build-construction phase.- Susan Smith, AEC Café, May 26, 2008
