Building Information Models (BIM) have demonstrated great value for design and pre-construction processes. Going further and leveraging field data in the BIM for construction, commissioning, handover and operations & maintenance (O&M) is a concept called Field BIM. There are two components to the Vela Field BIM product, each outlined below:
The Field BIM-Data product tightly integrates with BIM to enable end users to leverage BIM objects (e.g., equipment) and their attributes (e.g., name, type, manufacturer) in specific Vela Field Management workflows (e.g., Commissioning). Data is passed from the model to Vela, then back again, creating a BIM that has new attributes from the field that are dynamically updated as work and operations progress. End users do not even need to see the BIM while in the field - the data are a part of the workflow in Vela Systems. However, not all information will be stored in the BIM nor should it be - Vela Systems' cloud computing-based software extends BIM so its objects can be used to access other data, documents and more stored in the cloud.
See specific Field BIM® example of Commissioning and Handover.
The Field BIM-Interactive product enables users to bring the visual model with them out to the point of construction™ and use it to execute on work. Key features of Field BIM-Interactive include the ability for users to work online or offline and a simple interface that will allow a user to put themselves "inside" the model. Projects may use many different types of models for different types of work - Field BIM-Interactive will support model files of various types, including Autodesk Revit®, Autodesk Navisworks®, and Tekla Structures® in early releases, with other model types including Bentley i-Models® and others to follow.
