VELA SYSTEMS CO-FOUNDER ELECTED TO THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS

Vela Systems Co-Founder and Vice President of Product Strategy Adam Omansky has been elected to the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Burlington, MA - September 10, 2008 - Vela Systems Co-Founder and Vice President of Product Strategy Adam Omansky, A.M.ASCE, has been elected as an Associate Member of the ASCE® American Society of Civil Engineers, by action of the Board of Direction. Adam is representing Vela in the Construction Institute (CI), one of seven Institutes in ASCE®, with the high-level objective of advancing mobile field technologies to automate and optimize field operations in civil construction project delivery. The Construction Institute was established as a result of a merger between the Construction and Materials Divisions at ASCE.

Adam highlights "Civil construction project delivery, such as pipeline or utility infrastructure, is sensitive to safety, time to revenue, quality control, quality assurance and a broad spectrum of other factors dependent on operations out in the field.

To be competitive in today's marketplace, professional engineers and construction managers can no longer deliver projects in the field with weatherproof field notebooks, paper and clipboard, pre-printed paper forms and half-size drawings.

Mobile field software, optimized for use on mobile hardware devices such as Tablet PCs, is now critical to drive safety best practices and manage risks, accelerate project delivery, eliminate costly errors and reworks, and optimize work crew productivity -- and ultimately profitability.

Leading contractors, engineers and other design and construction professionals recognize that the time consuming and error prone paper-based and Microsoft Excel®-based field processes are not an option, in the same way that the 3-person manual transit is not an option for surveying today.

As a comparison, total station technology is now commonplace for fast and accurate surveying, engineering and monitoring processes out in the field. Total stations help to optimize labor and overall construction productivity and help to drive profitability.

Similarly, mobile field software, for field processes such as work lists, field reports, safety inspections and materials management, is rapidly becoming commonplace as well, because of its immediately recognizable and measurable benefits to optimize labor and overall construction productivity and help to drive profitability."

Adam comments "Supers remark frankly that Vela's easy-to-use field software is a no-brainer!"

"CI is the first national organization designed to meet the needs of all individuals working within the construction industry. Membership not only includes those persons involved in building the construction project, designing the construction projects, and teaching construction, but also equipment suppliers, material suppliers, testing laboratories, bonding agencies, insurance providers, financial firms, accounting firms, and legal firms that support and contribute to the growth and development of the construction industry." (From ASCE® American Society of Civil Engineers Construction Institute (CI) History). The Construction Institute's mission is "to bring together all stakeholders to advance and improve the construction industry. The Construction Institute is the leader promoting excellence in construction. Industry leaders are active CI members and their initiatives lead to increased collaboration of all individuals working within the construction industry."
