Burlington, MA - August 11, 2009 - After years of pioneering in the areas of scheduling and construction management technology, Hill International (Hill), one of Engineering News-Record magazine's top ranked U.S. construction management firms, announced it is deploying an enterprise field software platform.

Hill is teaming with Vela Systems to automate field processes in construction. By equipping field personnel with Vela's construction field software, and the latest advances in Tablet PC technology, Hill is anticipating some immediate return both in the field and at the enterprise level.

"This is a critical piece for our construction technology platform," said Shawn Pressley, vice president of project management, systems & development for Hill International. "We have great software for scheduling, construction management and Building Information Modeling (BIM). With these tools, we are creating a wealth of information that can help on the jobsite, but the challenge is in making our field personnel capable of leveraging all of this automation and removing delays in communication between the field and the office. Using Vela, this is precisely what we're changing."

Beyond the increased level of visibility that construction managers and executives will have into the status of work in the field, additional benefits of the new field software platform include time savings, more quality control, increased collaboration and minimized downtime in the field. Vela Systems software accelerates the field administration process by replacing traditional field notebooks, paper plans and clipboards with easy-to-use software and Tablet PCs. Field personnel simply mark up plans and documents using a digital pen on a Tablet PC. Digital photos can be added to specific observations immediately in the field and any written text is automatically turned into typed text by the Tablet PC. Then, the detail is aggregated automatically across projects and the company into executive dashboards. Vela Systems is a member of the Oracle PartnerNetwork.

Hill International also has standardized on Oracle's Primavera Contract Management solution for change management, document control, job cost and field controls, and project collaboration and management to keep construction projects on schedule and on-budget. Oracle's Primavera Project Portfolio Management solutions help project-intensive businesses manage their entire project portfolio lifecycle.

"Despite the massive growth of mobile technology in other industries over the last several decades , and that software for scheduling and construction management has become commonplace in most other areas of construction, jobsite personnel still mostly work the way they did 20 years ago," Pressley continued. "Vela Systems software and Oracle's Primavera Contract Management provide breakthroughs that are turning into a huge competitive advantage for companies like ours whose success hinges on delivering projects faster, jobsite efficiency, Owner visibility into the jobsite and managing construction risk." Vela Systems will immediately solve two major field challenges, according to Pressley. First, field personnel need to constantly retype field notes and spend time heading back and forth across expansive jobsites to update documents and share critical project updates. Secondly, field personnel are limited by the number and scope of items that they can tackle and efficiently communicate through current means.

"This model, which wraps field processes into existing construction technology infrastructures, is becoming the standard for our industry," Pressley said. "We're excited to be leading this charge to streamline field processes while enhancing the jobsite with critical information to help field personnel at the same time."
