Punching goes paperless

Washington Business Journal - by Mark Hilpert

Don Ghent of Gensler Architects already wears two cell phones to back up a BlackBerry, but he's lugging around yet another gadget these days as he wraps up construction at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center at National Harbor.

Ghent worked with Vela Systems to come up with an electronic tablet that's helping his staff get the resort's 2,000 rooms "punched" for flaws and fixed by opening day April 25. The tablets have reduced punching time per room to 20 minutes. With rooms containing 15 to 20 problems on average, punching a room with pencil and paper can take up to an hour.

"We knew doing it the paper way would cost us 10 times as much as doing it electronically," Ghent says. "We needed to be fast and nimble."

He and Vela Systems, founded by a construction manager frustrated that even meter maids had mobile technology that he lacked, identified software that allowed punching to be done in a high-tech, mobile, shareable format. It runs on "rugged" PC tablets made by Austin's Motion Computing. The tablets, which allow on-screen writing, include a 60-gigabyte hard drive and up to four gigabytes of RAM. Their batteries last up to seven hours.
