Last week we got our hands on the latest iPad. We’re pretty excited about how some of the new capabilities can be used for construction jobsites.
First things first. The new iPad is now known officially as “the new iPad,” not the iPad 3 or iPad HD as we and others had guessed. This does make sense with the way Apple names its products since they’ve had many generations of iPods and MacBooks where the features are updated, but the name stays the same.
Here are three great reasons to use the new iPad on your construction projects:
1. Better jobsite pictures
If you take lots of pictures for site inspections, you’ll appreciate the improvements in the quality of the new iPad’s camera. The camera is now 5 mega-pixels with auto focus, and the difference is noticeable.
In my non-scientific side-by-side comparison below, you can see the detail along the edges is much clearer in the new iPad’s photo versus the iPad 2’s image of the same ductwork. If you zoom in on your photos, you’ll notice the difference even more so.

Of course, the new ultra-high definition retina screen that comes with the new iPad makes photos and everything else really shine too, including Vela Mobile.
2. Faster Field BIM
Our new Field BIM-Interactive product, where you can use your 3D models on your iPad, really harnesses the improvements in both the dual-core CPU and quad-core graphics that comes with the new iPad’s A5X chip.
When you’re navigating your model, you’ll see how quickly you can zoom from point to point anywhere in your model, and the graphics are stunning.
3. Voice dictation
We’ve talked to many field users about using voice dictation instead of typing on the keyboard and it has finally arrived. Now when you’re working on your project’s QA/QC inspections you can just speak your issues or comments right into Vela Mobile and Apple’s cloud-based servers instantly translate your voice to text. We’re excited about all the great upgrades that come with the new iPad and how it will make using an iPad for construction even better. And, if you’re buying your first iPad now, you’re in luck because you get all of these things for the same price as the previous iPad 2 model!
We’re interested to hear from you so post a comment here and tell us what you like the best about the new iPad.
